Acceptance and scope
Using cognate.press means accepting the terms on this page. They cover this site and the material published on it, and nothing else. They do not cover the seven publications the imprint stands behind: each is a separate site on its own domain with its own terms, and those apply once you are there. The same goes for any other service reached from here — a repository, a vendor’s documentation, a newsletter provider.
What is published here
The imprint publishes no articles. This site carries the record of the network — what each publication is, who writes it, and what it has put out — together with the identity system behind the imprint and a small set of portable components other sites are meant to embed. The writing itself lives on the publications’ own domains, under their own terms.
How this material may be reused
Two different answers apply to two different kinds of material, and the split matters enough to state it rather than leave it to a line in a footer.
Pages, prose, descriptions and the design system are all rights reserved. Quoting a reasonable extract is permitted — a paragraph, a figure, enough to make your point — with attribution to Cognate Press and a link back to the page you took it from. Republishing a page in full, translating one in full, or reposting one on another site is not permitted, with or without attribution. Ask first at contact@cognate.press; permission for a specific reuse is usually straightforward.
The portable components are MIT-licensed. The blocks published under /portable/ — the network bar, the footer grid, the footer signature — exist to be pasted into other people’s pages, which is a purpose that a reserved-rights notice would defeat. They are therefore released under the MIT licence, whose permission and warranty text is reproduced here in full so that relying on it does not require finding it somewhere else:

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the “Software”), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:
The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.
In that text, “the Software” means the portable components published on this site. Paste them, change them, ship them in commercial work; keep the notice above with any substantial portion you redistribute as code. The licence covers the markup and the styles — it does not cover the mark that sits inside them, which is dealt with next.
The mark and the name
“Cognate Press”, the wordmark, and the asterisk emblem are the imprint’s marks and are not licensed by anything on this page. Using them to refer to the imprint — naming it, linking to it, illustrating a piece written about it — is nominative use and needs no permission.
Using them as your own mark, or in a way that suggests a publication, product or service is part of the imprint or endorsed by it when it is not, is neither permitted nor accurate. The mark is the whole of what the imprint asserts; a site carrying it is claiming that a named specialist wrote every word on it.
Links to the publications and elsewhere
Every publication listed here is a separate site with its own operator and its own terms, and the imprint neither hosts nor serves any of them. Pages here also link out to documentation, source code and other people’s writing. Those sites are not controlled by Cognate Press and their content can change after a link is published. A link is a pointer to something worth reading, not an endorsement of the site that hosts it.
No warranty
The material here is provided as is. The listings describe what each publication was doing when the page was built: an article count, a first issue, a description a site uses of itself. Those change on the publications’ own schedule, and this site can be behind. Nothing published here is professional advice.
Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, Cognate Press is not liable for loss or damage arising from use of this site or its content, including lost data, downtime, or lost revenue following from applying something you read here or in a component you embedded from here.
Nothing in this section limits or excludes liability that cannot be limited or excluded under mandatory law. That includes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and the rights you hold as a consumer under EU consumer protection law, which remain unaffected by anything on this page.
Trademarks
PHP, JavaScript, Java, Python, Go, SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL and other language, product and project names are the property of their respective owners. They are used here to name the subject a publication writes about — nominative use — and imply no affiliation with, or endorsement by, their owners.
Changes
These terms can change. The version on this page is the one in force, dated at the top of the page, and earlier versions are not archived. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the version published at that time.
Contact
Questions about these terms, and requests for permission beyond what they grant: contact@cognate.press. The identity and contact details of the party responsible for personal data are stated in the Privacy Policy, which is also where this site’s data processing is described in full.
Questions about this page go to contact@cognate.press. The others in this set are the Privacy Policy and the Cookie Policy. Every publication in the network answers for its own domain, under its own policies.
